This Morning on the Little Bitty Farm

So today I wanted to try something new!  I took our little tablet outside and filmed Mrs. Potts and her brood, and another general video of the all animals.  Clearly I need some work in the videography department, however.  I can't hold the thing still for the life of me!  It's really bad when even the "stabilize" feature on YouTube doesn't help your videos.  Besides the fact that the quality really stinks and the sound blips in and out.

Oh, well.  I tried!  Maybe one day we will get a decent camera, made for taking videos.  That would be fun!

Real friends...

Real friends don't hold anything back from their bloggy friends.

And y'all are my extra-special bloggy friends.

I was going to post these pictures tomorrow morning, but how could I do that to you all?  Confession:  I named the images  for this post "cutepuff.jpg".  Yes, cute puff.  Because that is what they are, and they are ridiculously adorable for only a few days.  So, ENJOY!!

My heart is melting.  LOL!
CUTE. PUFFS.
Cute overload.
Side note:  I sustained approximately two bites from Mrs. Potts for your viewing pleasure.  It's okay though, it really didn't hurt much.  Haha!
You - out - NOW!!!
Everyone else wanted to see what the fuss was all about...
It reminds me of the scene from the Lion King where all the animals come to see the new baby... except this is the Circle of Life farm style!!

I really don't think I need to tell you to have a good evening... because now you should be having one!!  I know I sure am.  :D

Guess what??

Yep!!  Mrs. Potts hatched her babies!!
Of course, as usual, they are completely adorable.  There looks to be seven in all this hatch, and everyone is doing great.  It always amazes me how tiny bantam babies are.  So, so cute!
I will be looking for homes for these chicks and Mrs. Potts' last brood as well (in the future) in order to make room for more chicks next spring.  Chickens are so much fun, and sharing them is even better!!
Mrs. Potts' last brood, getting big!
Special thanks also to Lizzy at the Considerer for nominating me for the Versatile Blogger Award.  Very kind of you, Lizzy!

I hope you all have a wonderful day!!  I plan on getting better pictures of Mrs. Potts and her brood when she decides to venture outside.

Garage Sale Book Haul

Since part of the fun of garage sales for me is buying books for super cheap, I thought it would be fun to do occasional reviews of the stories I have bought and read!
Today I am going to review four of the books I bought on my last garage sale hunt. I know it may seem odd to review these old children's books, but those are my favorite books to read!  They are so simple, so innocent, and usually convey a touching message.

"Ruby Holler"

This book was... odd.  It was about twin orphans who were taken from an orphanage by various terrible people who made them live in basements, dig wells, etc.  Finally a sweet old couple comes to adopt the twins, but the twins are often frightened and resentful because of their past.  In the end, the twins learn to trust the old folks, but the book leaves a lot of loose ends and there is no sequel.  Not really sure what the author was thinking at the end of this one... it was as if she got busy with another project or something and just cut things off.  It was just odd lol!

"Because of Winn-Dixie"

This book has been my favorite read so far.  It is about a little girl (Opal) and her father who move to a new town. Opal takes in and becomes friends with a stray dog (Winn-Dixie).  Winn-Dixie and Opal have a special way of reaching out to the old and young alike, and they learn to see the good in people, and that often people who act mean or rude are hurting inside and really just need a friend. I thought this was a touching, simple book with a great message and a really sweet ending.

"Bridge to Terabithia"

This is one I have heard many love, but I had never read it in my childhood years so I wanted to give it a go.  This was probably my least favorite book of this book haul...  it has a really sad ending and the children in this book were different than Opal in Winn-Dixie, who reached out to older and younger people and learned to help those who made fun of her.  I had hoped this book was more about the children's adventures in Terabithia, but there really was not much about that at all.

"Charlotte's Web"

This was a fun book!  I remember watching the movie over and over as a child, but I had never had the privilege of reading the book.  From what I remember, the book is really similar to the movie.  I thought this was a wonderful book that teaches about life and friendship through the eyes of a runt pig and a mannerly spider.

There you have it, my review!  I had a blast reading these books and I can't wait to finish the others I bought and to go out and find more!!  Have you read any of these books in your childhood?  Any likes or dislikes?

Heavy Storms and High Winds!

Last night we were blessed with heavy rain!  We are very thankful.  However, along with the rain came high winds and lightening.  I am so glad that nothing appears to have been damaged and the animals are all just fine.  There is still the low rumble of thunder in the distance, so we may be getting some more after a while!
The storm didn't scare Gyppie!  She's so pretty.
Jakey Bo hates storms!
I thought these were pretty... they grow on the dog fence each year.

Rain clouds moving out.

A rainbow!  This was taken a couple of days ago during another storm.
So it would seem we are certainly caught up on rain!  Hopefully other places were caught up as well and hay prices will stay low this year.  Last year we bought square hay bales for 10$/bale, this year I bought even better quality ones for only $4/bale!!  Let's hope that trend keeps going!

Petrie, The Protector

I snapped this photo from our french doors yesterday.  I love it!  It is so telling of Petrie's sweet, protective nature over his hens.  I also love the fact that our chickens sleep just beside the back door.  I don't know why - it is just precious to watch them happily preen themselves and rest!

Meanwhile, Mrs. Potts is brooding away over her eggs in solitude.  Waiting, waiting, waiting.  I wonder what this hatch will bring?  I am excited for next year when we start getting a few cute mixed breeds between the bantams and Cochins and Spitzhaubens!  It should be interesting.

I am also thinking about trying to enter a couple of the girls in the fair.  I have separated out a Cochin and Spitz hen.  I am nervous though, as I have never entered a chicken in a fair before!  I have so many questions.

That's it for today (so far, ha)!

Have a great day all!

IT RAINED!!!

To my extreme pleasure yesterday, we got a good rain!!  The first one was quite a downpour and lasted about 20 minutes.  The second shower also lasted about 20 minutes, although it was a bit lighter.  I am not sure how much rain we got all told, but it was enough to get things to start greening up again!  Hopefully we will get more rain later in the week.  Rain is a very good thing!!

The clouds were so pretty, too:
So glad we got some relief!

Mrs. Potts - The Queen of Broody

Mrs. Potts is definitely broody again!  I am just going to let her have her way - if I move her eggs like last time I know she will move them to underneath the brooder house (which I wish she was in now) and if I move them from there she will probably move them out into the woods somewhere and I do not want that.  So, more chicks we shall have soon!  I am okay with that though, especially since we were recently hit by some kind of predator that wiped out five members of our flock, most of them being Mrs. Potts' babies.  I also have some folks that I know of wanting some chickens, too!
Jake is being such a good boy, and Arwen too, but I just had to share this adorable picture of Jake.  He is so calm with the chickens and watches them like a good collie should.  You would never suspect he ever killed and ate one almost a year ago!
"Yes mama, I know I'm good."
This is the look I get from the geese (except usually there are two more pairs of eyes) when they are hungry.
"Feed me or I peck the glass."
Our tomatoes!  There were more but we ate them already haha!  And yes, they are as good as they look.  Yum, yum, and YUM!!  And we have more to come!  I am so glad our tomatoes came through this year.  Last year we had an awful drought and lost almost all of our plants, harvesting only a couple of tomatoes.
And just some chicken chattering:
"Did you HEAR Mrs. Potts is broody AGAIN?"  "I'll say, that woman..."
Have a great day y'all!

Hooves

Today was another beautiful day on the Little Bitty Farm!  We got a bit of a cool front so this morning was nice.  (Still no rain though, sad.)

Our tomatoes are getting closer and closer to being ripe!!  We had one ripe one a few weeks ago and now the rest of the tomatoes are finally starting to look ready.  I am going to stuff myself silly!
YUM!
In other news, Bill got a much-needed hoof trim yesterday.  I try to get him trimmed about every 8 weeks but because we got busy and our farrier was out of town for awhile, it got pushed out longer than I would have liked.
Sweet Bill looking gorgeous.
Pretty hooves!
Slightly dirty but healthy pony hoof.
Some of the feathered friends wanted to say hi...
Dalia - "I hope she is getting my good side."
"Senor Weedeater, at your service."
Have a lovely day to all my readers!

Wishing For Rain

Boy has it been hot and DRY!  We need some rain so badly.  All of the green grass in the fields and in our yard has started turning yellow.  Bill has almost snipped off everything green he could find in the woods and I am having to let him out for longer periods now and give him more hay.

We did have some storms just slightly south of us today.  We had hoped they would bring some much needed relief, but they are breaking down now and have not moved our way.  Sad!!

I did get a good shot of the pretty sky though!
Sky on fire!
Some beautiful flowers growing in the heat.
The chickies all tucked in for the night.
Nothing much new to report right now, I have just been super busy getting adjusted to my new job.  I think I am going to find a good rhythm soon, so that is good so that I will be able to blog more.  Have a lovely evening, all!

Deal Huntin'!

Oh boy, these are some of my favorite posts!!  I just love going on a good garage sale hunt with my family, especially when I find great deals.  And today I sure did!  Here are just a few of the items I purchased below...
Books!!!  I love books.  We bought all of these classics for a total of $1.35!!
A great pair of rubber boots for me to wear in the chicken pen.  Listed for $7.50, bought for $5.00!
Pet crate in GREAT condition.  Listed for $10, bought for $5!!
This is the purchase I am most excited about - the bar stools.  Listed at $30 (a deal in and of itself) and bought for only $15!!!  Woo hoo!
Amount spent today on the above items:  $26.35
Amount saved by asking for a lower price:  $22.50 (In other words, the total I spent on the above items would have been $48.85 if I had not asked for a lower price!)
Amount saved by buying used instead of new:  $250 at least!  It is hard to know exactly how much I saved since I don't know the exact prices of everything new.  So, I just went online and tried to determine what the going price was for all of the items listed.

Not bad, if I do say so myself.  What a fun time we had!

An All American Day!

Yesterday we celebrated the 4th of July!!  Yesterday marked the 237th birthday of the Declaration of Independence which was adopted on July 4, 1776.

To celebrate, we had an all-American day.  We cooked out, had pie and watermelon, and then we went to watch a little baseball and fireworks.  (Sorry my font is acting up... not sure why it is not cooperating!)

Dad smoked chicken and fish!
Our lovely centerpiece!
Patriotic cookies.

Getting ready to eat!  Sad I forgot to get Dad in the picture lol...

YUM!!!

An all-American kiss!
Watching baseball before the fireworks...
They were so pretty!

The Grand Finale!!!
We had such a great time!  It was a wonderful, very relaxing day.
